I need to replace the shock which holds up the cooler cover. Has anyone had to do the same and if so what advice can you render? I would like to assume that it is the same thing as on a car hood but there must be some specs which I should be observing. Any help will be appreciated.

Not to worry. Friday I went to my local auto supply outlet (VIP) and inquired, There was a rack if gas charged lift supports of various sizes and connector configurations. The parts guy said that as far as he knew the only differences in them were length and connection configurations. I plowed through the rack and matched the exsisting one perfectly. I ended up with a Lift-O-Mat SG314006. Looks like it was made by SACHS North America. Yesterday I installed it and it took 10 minutes and works perfecrtly. Cost $15. Happy lifting.

At your suggestion, I visited my local VIP and bought the same unit. This wouldn't "collapse" - I found the force on this one too high.

HOWEVER - went back and bouth Hach SG359011 - this fit and operates my cooler PERFECTLY!

Thanks!

What you need is a very standard gas strut. You can get one at any NAPA store for about $15. just bring the old one in and they can get you one of the right dimensions. Be sure to get one with enough thrust - 60 lbs. It seems like a lot but I went fronm 25# to 40# before finally settling on 60. The lower powered ones work ok when the cooler is empty but lose their efficency when things get cold as they do when you are using the damn thing.

i also replaced the little side slide latches with a center locking hasp which works much better.
