We are getting backup into our head. After pumping it (even for an extended period of time), we get some of the contents seeping back into the bowl. The level of the contents can range from a few inches to 3/4 full. It is not very pleasant. Any thoughts before we take the head assembly apart?

I've read that this might be related to the head assembly -- some sort of gasket might be blown.

Anyone know anything more than this?

Not an expert here, but it sounds like the exit valve in the head, called the joker valve, may be broken or is not working properly, maybe stuck open. At least that was the problem with mine earlier this year.
This link should help:

If the problem is 'in your head' (literally), west marine stocks rebuild kits for some mdels. For my Groco, head, there are two rebuild kits available, the full kit and the partial kit. I used the full kit, it takes an hour or so. If the head still operates, you can try pumping a lot of fresh water thru it before taking apart for repair, making the job easier to bear.
Good luck

You need to rebuild the head. Is easy but not my favorite job. I have done it once since I have had my boat. The kit is pricey but it sure beats the head not working. There is a lubricant that they sell that helps to keep the head parts working correctly. I add it each fall when I store the boat.

I'm assuming that the Groco head unit that came standard with the 1987 P31-II is the HF model?

Does anyone know the difference between the Master and Standard repair kits that West Marine carries?
